Long live true love.
My sister Valerie is engaged. It's remarkable and wonderful news! Stevie
Wood, her fiancé, is a great guy, and a lot like our dad in that he
likes motorcycles and is a skilled tradesman. But Stevie is also sensitive,
and is able to talk -- something that is fantastic but unusual for a
PEI man. And it's the balance of Valerie's passion and Stevie's reason
that's the magic elixir that makes Val & Stevie work, I think. My sister
is a strong woman who has been through a lot in life. I understand her
needs because I share them. Even though I was the older sibling in our
childhood house -- and was therefore often at odds with her -- she knows
that what we both needed was a loving and strong partner who would recognize
our strengths and who would give us the support we need to be our true
selves. Stevie is that for Val, as Suzy is for me. That's why we celebrate
their engagement. May they live long and prosper, together.

Black nylon
A friend of mine recently commented over dinner that she thought it
was great how I had come from such a small town, with so little, and
have done so well in "urban Canada" -- even if I'm "obviously not totally
comfortable in a suit". I'll admit it; the first day I arrived in Ottawa
from Charlottetown (in 1986 at 19 years of age) I had to ask for help
using public transit, and then expected to see everyone on board chit-chatting
and smiling. And it's true, I hate wearing a tie. The most comfortable
formal wear I've experienced is a kilt. I just wish I could wear one
to client meetings. A flash here or there might stir the creative juices.
Today my sense of appropriate attire took another knock. I enjoyed
a delicious lunch and good conversation with Charles Robert, Principal
Clerk (Procedure) for the Senate of Canada (he serves on the volunteer
board of one of my clients, and enticed me to lunch with his insider's
view of the Hill and a pile of old copies of The New York Review of
Books). We enjoyed the robust buffet at the Parliamentary Restaurant
-- that is, after I was asked to clip a black nylon tie to my open collar
shirt. How embarrassing!
